Compliance and commuter safety

To ensure passenger trains were meeting equitable access requirements, Queensland Rail commissioned Spatial Ops to scan a suite of existing carriages. The brief involved checking walkway clearances and the high voltage pantograph equipment (the device that currents from wires on electric trains), which needed updating to meet code specifications. The client required extraordinarily detailed 3D models, accurate to the millimetre.

Fully customisable service

Using the laser scanning technology, we capture the carriages in the form of high definition 3D point clouds. Internal section of carriages were extracted to produce 2D drawings and 3D mesh of the pantograph.

The flexibility and ease of our Spatial Ops applications meant that we could scan Queensland Rail’s rolling stock throughout Queensland: from Normanton in the remote gulf region, to Cairns and Brisbane.

Normanton Railway Station, QLD

Spatial Ops was engaged to 3D laser scan the historic Normanton Railway Station and iconic Gulflander locomotive in Queensland's Carpentaria region.

We were able to capture the heritage-listed building and carriage fleet in high-definition point cloud for extrapolation of detailed measured drawings.

Trail-blazing technology

Using the laser scanner, we were able to capture HDR panoramic photos of the historic Gulflander train. These panoramas provided a detailed photographic record of conditions being measured. Further, they can be used to apply colour within the 3D point cloud. From the 3D point cloud scans, Spatial Ops was able to produce the external elevations and internal sections of the locomotive in full and limited depth view to create measured plans.

Kuranda Station, QLD

The famous Kuranda Scenic Railway traverses Far North Queensland's lush rainforest from Cairns to Kuranda. Spatial Ops were deployed to 3D laser scan the heritage-listed Kuranda Station to produce measured drawings sets.

External elevations of the historic platform and detailed internal sections of the iconic tourist carriages were manipulated from point cloud data to provide measurements with pin-point accuracy.
