Moorooka Bowls Club

Community / Adaptive Reuse

Reviving a much-loved community asset

Moorooka Bowls Club is a cherished community facility owned by Brisbane City Council. It once served as a host facility for the 1982 Commonwealth Games (it was visited by Queen Elizabeth II during the Games), and for over 50 years was a vital social hub for the local community.

Sadly, due to declining use, it was forced to close its doors as a bowls club. However, Council recently re-let the facility to a local non-profit organisation, Third PlaceGroup, who are renovating the facility through a crowdfunding campaign and with energetic volunteer support.

A 3D record for future developments

As the building hadn’t been documented since the 1990s (and those plans no longer existed), a baseline set of architectural drawings were required for the refurbishment. We used the scanner to provide accurate, large-scale drawings of the building and site. Critically, this was achieved in only two days, with just one site visit. As there was a limited budget for the refurbishment, the speed and efficiency of Spatial Ops meant this great community project could proceed without the cost and time involved in manual measuring and re-documenting.
