Boggo Road Gaol

Heritage site of prison facilities

The Boggo Road Gaol is a heritage-listed former Brisbane Prison. For 109 years it dominated the skyline of Dutton Park, Brisbane. Boggo Road Gaol opened in 1883 and more than 500,000 people passed through the gates as prisoners, guards, or visitors, before it was closed in 1992. Today Number Two Division is the only remaining section.

Extraordinary detail in heritage restoration

Using Spatial Ops technology, we were able to provide the architects with an accurate 3D model of the building and grounds as well as creating a historical record of the building. We used point cloud data from the 3D laser scan to provide base drawings in Revit/CAD, with detailing from skirtings to balustrades, to topography and building facades. This digital capture from a five-day site visit enabled us to start the sketch design process within a short timeframe. The intricate detail captured by the scanner would traditionally be unattainable at such speed using manual measurements to replicate building elements.

Output of 3D laser scan

In just over eight weeks, we took internal and external colour scans to capture complex and precise data about the building. We measured dozens of arches, doors, ceilings, trusses, the roof structure and attic. Using computer-aided design (CAD) modelling, we’ve produced ‘as-built’ plans, sections and elevations that can be used for archiving as well as any future work on the site.
